31 March – The Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis

The 31st of March is a day, which is commemorated with sadness and sorrow for Azerbaijani people and worldwide Azerbaijanis. Since 1998, the 31st of March, Day of Azerbaijanis genocide is annually remembered in the Republic of Azerbaijan at official level. In this regard, On Thursday, the Baku State University (BSU) organized an event to mark the Genocide Day of Azerbaijanis. Event was opened by the rector, academician Abel Maharramov. Participants paid tribute to the innocent people killed in Azerbaijan in March-April 1918. The Armenians set fire to homes and burned people alive. They destroyed national architectural treasures, schools, hospitals, mosques and other facilities, and left the
greater part of Baku in ruins. The genocide of the Azerbaijanis was carried out with particular cruelty in Baku, Shemakha and Guba districts and the Karabakh,
Zangazur,Nakhichevan, Lenkoran and other regions of Azerbaijan. Abel Maharramov said, that the corresponding estimate was given to this tragedy after the decree of the Azerbaijan President Heydar Aliyev of 26 March 1998. "We must build a strong national memory on mind of present and future generations, ensure that the world community would give the political and legal assessment to this tragedy, continue the fight against " the double standards "" - summed up, academician Abel Maharramov.
