Another “Azerbaijani Language – Open Lessons” Session Held at BSU
The latest guest of the “Azerbaijani Language – Open Lessons” project at Baku State University (BSU) was Shahla Ahmadova, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Azerbaijani Language at Baku Slavic University.
During the session, Shahla Ahmadova delivered a detailed presentation on the lexical and semantic system of contemporary Azerbaijani, focusing on the place and functional characteristics of dialectal words and neologisms, as well as the impact of the intensive use of borrowed vocabulary on the development of the literary language and its internal resources.
The presentation provided a scholarly analysis of dynamic changes in Azerbaijani vocabulary resulting from social, cultural, scientific, and technological developments. Particular attention was given to changes in the lexical and grammatical meanings of words at different stages of the language’s historical development, semantic transformations, the broadening and narrowing of shades of meaning, and the emergence of new meanings and functions.
The discussion also covered the enrichment of the vocabulary with new words and expressions, mechanisms of neologism formation, the incorporation of dialectal words and elements into the literary language, and the adaptation of borrowed vocabulary to the national language system. The speaker also addressed the impact of these processes on language norms, national linguistic characteristics, and the language’s internal word-formation mechanisms.
At the end of the session, Shahla Ahmadova presented participants with several reference works, including the “Etymological Dictionary,” “Dictionary of the Koroghlu Epic,” and “Dictionary of Zoological Terms.”
