Architecture and Urban Sociology Discussed at BSU

03/03/2026

An event entitled “Architecture and Urban Sociology” was held at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Psychology of Baku State University (BSU).

Opening the event, Uzeyir Shefiyev, Head of the Department of Social Work, noted that 2026 has been declared the “Year of Urban Development and Architecture” in the country. He emphasized that Azerbaijan’s cooperation with the UN Human Settlements Programme, the organization of national urban development forums, and the upcoming 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), to be held in Baku, demonstrate the country’s growing role in sustainable urbanization and the success of its international partnerships.

It was noted that WUF13, to be held under the motto “Housing for All: Safe and Sustainable Cities and Communities,” serves as a global platform for addressing the most pressing issues related to urban development.

Uzeyir Shefiyev noted that the declaration of 2026 as the “Year of Urban Development and Architecture” is not coincidental. Referring to President Ilham Aliyev’s speeches, he highlighted their importance from the perspective of urban sociology. He stated that large-scale urban development projects are being implemented across the country, from the capital to the regions. One of the key elements of the “Baku 2040 Master Plan” is the adoption of a multi-center development model, which envisions the formation of a network of interconnected centers and sub-centers throughout Baku instead of concentrating all activities in a single core area.

During the event, Uzeyir Shefiyev also presented proposals for projects that social science specialists could implement within the framework of the “Year of Urban Development and Architecture.”

The event concluded with a question-and-answer session, during which students’ questions were addressed.
