BSU Archaeological Research Center Staff Achieve Success in International Grant Competition
The project "Atlas of Ancient Fortifications of the Greater Caucasus," involving researchers from the Educational and Research Archaeological Center of Baku State University (BSU), has been awarded a grant by the UK's Leverhulme Trust.
With a total budget of AZN 1.1 million, the project will be implemented in partnership with the University of Edinburgh. The research will focus on the study of ancient defensive structures in the Greater Caucasus regions of Azerbaijan and Georgia, their digital documentation, and their presentation in a comprehensive atlas.
Aslan Gasimov, Director of BSU's Educational and Research Archaeological Center, will serve as the Azerbaijan coordinator for the project. One of the project's principal researchers is Mirjavid Agalarov, a research fellow at the Center and recipient of the Presidential Award.
The project will bring together archaeologists from Azerbaijan and Georgia to investigate fortresses, defensive walls, towers, and other archaeological fortification sites in both countries. The team will collect archaeological, historical, and geographical data, verify the sites' locations and architectural features, and apply modern mapping and documentation techniques.
