BSU Astrophysicists Announce Observation of the π-Puppid Meteor Shower
The π-Puppid meteor shower will be active from April 15 to 28, with its peak activity expected on April 23.
According to the Department of Astrophysics at the Physics Faculty of Baku State University (BSU), the π-Puppid meteor shower is associated with comet 26P/Grigg-Skjellerup, which was discovered in 1972. The shower gets its name from its radiant, which is located in the constellation Puppis.
The shower was notably active in 1977 and 1982, with around 40 meteors observed per hour. In 1983, the activity decreased, with about 13 meteors per hour recorded. Since then, the activity has been relatively low, although it remains possible for the shower to experience higher activity. The meteors will travel at a speed of approximately 18 km/h.
In Baku, the meteor shower will be visible on the southwestern horizon from around 19:30 to 20:00. While the π-Puppid meteor shower is expected to be most visible in the Southern Hemisphere, it can still be observed in other regions.
