BSU Astrophysicists Issue Geomagnetic Forecast for March 18–30

18/03/2026

Astrophysicists at Baku State University (BSU) have released a geomagnetic activity forecast for March 18–30.

According to the Department of Astrophysics of the Faculty of Physics, solar activity is currently at a low-to-moderate level, driven by M-class solar flares (R1–R2), which may cause minor disruptions to radio communications.

The geomagnetic field is expected to remain at background levels until March 21. Weak geomagnetic disturbances (G1 level) are forecast for March 21–22 and March 25, while conditions at mid-latitudes will remain largely calm.

The Kp index, which measures geomagnetic storm intensity on a 10-point scale, is expected to reach 5 on March 21–22 and 25, and range between 2 and 4 on other days through the end of the month. At high latitudes, values may reach 6–7 on March 19.

The probability of M-class solar flares is estimated at 15%, while X-class flares remain unlikely at 5%. Overall, solar and geomagnetic activity will stay moderate, with no strong geomagnetic storms expected.
