BSU Astrophysicists: Super New Moon to Occur on June 15

05/06/2026

A Super New Moon will occur on June 15, according to the Department of Astrophysics of the Faculty of Physics at Baku State University (BSU).

The phenomenon takes place when the Moon reaches its new moon phase while simultaneously passing near perigee—the closest point in its orbit to Earth.

On June 15, the Moon will pass through perigee at 03:19 Baku time, when it will be approximately 357,195 kilometers from Earth. Just a few hours later, at 06:56, it will enter the new moon phase. Since the interval between perigee and the new moon will be only about 3 hours and 37 minutes, the event is classified as a Super New Moon.

BSU astrophysicists noted that one of the closest Super New Moons ever recorded occurred on January 22, 2023, when the Moon approached Earth at a distance of approximately 356,568 kilometers.
