BSU Astrophysicists: "The Orionid Meteor Shower Will Be Visible"

The Orionid meteor shower will be active from October 2 to 7, reaching its peak on the night of October 21–22.

According to the Department of Astrophysics of the Faculty of Physics at Baku State University (BSU), the constellation Orion rises above the horizon after midnight during this period, making it the most favorable time for observation. In clear weather, the phenomenon will also be visible in the skies of Azerbaijan.

The Orionids are considered one of the brightest and fastest meteor showers of the autumn season. Named after the constellation Orion, where their radiant appears, the shower can produce up to 20 meteors per hour at peak activity.

The Orionids are linked to Halley’s Comet, which leaves behind a long trail of dust and rocky particles. Each year, as Earth passes through this debris field, the particles burn up in the atmosphere, producing brilliant streaks of light.

A defining feature of the Orionids is their high velocity—meteors travel at about 66 km/s, creating short but intensely bright trails across the night sky.
