BSU Astrophysicists Warn of Upcoming Geomagnetic Storm

08/12/2025

The Department of Astrophysics at the Physics Faculty of Baku State University (BSU) reports that solar activity is currently low.

Several solar regions have recently produced C-class flares, which had minimal impact on Earth, and no Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are currently observed. However, based on the history of previous solar flares and the activity potential of active regions on the Sun, M-class (R1/R2 – moderate/intermediate) and X-class (strong) flares are likely between December 8–10.

On December 8, a glancing impact from the CME released by the Sun on December 4 may be observed. The geomagnetic effects on December 9 are expected to result from the CME emitted on December 6.

Accordingly, the Kp index of geomagnetic activity in mid-latitudes is forecasted to be 1–4 on December 8, rising to 5–6 on December 9, and returning to a normal range of 2–4 in the following days. In high-latitude regions, activity is expected at 2–4 on December 8, 5–7 on December 9, and 5–6 on December 10.

The geomagnetic field will reach moderate levels due to the CME of December 4, with continued effects on December 10 from the CME of December 6. Overall, geomagnetic activity is predicted to remain calm to variable in the days following these events.
