BSU Astrophysics Department Reports Ongoing Magnetic Storm

02/06/2025

The Department of Astrophysics at the Faculty of Physics of Baku State University (BSU) has reported a magnetic storm occurring on June 2, with a magnitude of 6 on a 10-point scale observed in the morning across mid-latitude regions.

According to the department, the storm's strength is expected to decrease gradually — dropping to level 5 after 09:00 and to level 4 after 12:00. Storms below magnitude 5 are generally considered to have minimal impact on Earth's environment.

In high-latitude regions, the storm is forecast to reach magnitudes of 6–7 by 12:00, decreasing to 3–4 by the end of the day. A renewed increase to levels 5–6 is expected on June 3 between 03:00 and 12:00.

By 15:00 on June 2, geomagnetic conditions in mid-latitude zones are expected to return to background levels.

The magnetic disturbances were triggered by a coronal mass ejection (CME) that occurred on May 31. The CME passed close to Earth, as observed in solar images captured by the STEREO and LASCO coronagraphs, resulting in the current geomagnetic activity.
