BSU Commemorates Genocide of Azerbaijanis on March 31
Baku State University (BSU) held an event on March 31 to commemorate the Day of Genocide of Azerbaijanis.
BSU Rector Elchin Babayev highlighted that the day honors the memory of tens of thousands of Azerbaijanis killed during the massacres of March–April 1918 in Baku, Shamakhi, Guba, Karabakh, and Zangezur. He emphasized that these atrocities targeted civilians based on nationality and religion, leaving a lasting mark on both Azerbaijani history and humanity.
The rector also noted that steps taken since Azerbaijan’s independence, including the establishment of the Guba Genocide Memorial Complex and ongoing historical research, help preserve national memory and inform the international community. He underscored that Azerbaijan’s recent victories, reconstruction efforts in Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur, and active role in global affairs reflect the resilience and achievements of the Azerbaijani people.
The event featured remarks from Professor Anar Iskandarov, Alimusa Ibrahimov, and Sabuhi Guliyev, and concluded with the screening of the documentary “In the Footsteps of History: March 31 – Day of the Genocide of Azerbaijanis”, written by Mahir Garibov.
