A scientific seminar titled “Production of Surface-Active Compounds Based on Alkylphenols” was held at the Faculty of Chemistry of Baku State University (BSU) to mark the 120th anniversary of the birth of Academician Yusif Mammadaliyev.

Professor Eldar Akhmedov, Head of the Department of Physical and Colloid Chemistry, spoke about Yusif Mammadaliyev’s scientific legacy and his exceptional contribution to the development of chemical science in Azerbaijan. He emphasized that the academician’s fundamental research in petrochemistry, catalysis, and organic synthesis remains relevant and valuable today.

Dean Fuad Kerimli noted that Yusif Mammadaliyev’s scientific school laid the foundation for a new direction in chemical science and highlighted the importance of such events in stimulating students’ interest in research and scientific inquiry.

Professor Jabrail Mirzai delivered a presentation on the life and academic career of the distinguished scientist. He underlined that Academician Mammadaliyev’s studies made a significant contribution to the development of petrochemistry, particularly in the alkylation of aromatic hydrocarbons, the synthesis of aviation fuels, and the preparation of special combustible mixtures. In the 1950s, components for rocket fuel were also developed under his leadership. He founded the Department of Petroleum Chemistry (now the Department of Petrochemistry and Chemical Engineering) at BSU and headed it for many years. His anniversaries have consistently been commemorated at a high level, and in 2005 his 100th anniversary was celebrated at UNESCO headquarters.

As part of the seminar, Lyaman Mirzayeva, a master’s student of the Department of Physical and Colloid Chemistry, spoke about the applications of surfactants in the chemical industry and their important role in areas such as detergent production, oil refining, textiles, cosmetics, paints and varnishes, and agrochemistry.

The event concluded with the screening of a video dedicated to the life and scientific contributions of Academician Yusif Mammadaliyev.
