Baku State University (BSU) has held another session of its “Azerbaijani Language – Open Lessons” project. The guest speaker was Academician Nizami Jafarov, Head of the Department of General Linguistics at BSU.

Ramin Samadov, Head of BSU’s Department of Humanitarian Affairs and Youth Policy, spoke about the factors influencing the Azerbaijani language in the modern era and the importance of preserving the native language. He emphasised that Azerbaijani is one of the key markers of national identity, cultural heritage and traditions of statehood, stressing that preserving the purity of the language and using it correctly are everyone’s responsibility.

In his address, Academician Nizami Jafarov discussed the distinctive features of the Azerbaijani language’s development, the formation of the literary language, and the social, cultural and historical factors that have shaped this process. He noted that language development is closely linked to society’s mentality, scientific progress and cultural life.

Highlighting the contributions of writers, poets and journalists to the enrichment of the literary language, the scholar noted that they had significantly expanded its expressive potential, introduced new words and expressions into wider use, and helped establish linguistic norms.

The session also underscored that protecting and developing the literary language is the responsibility not only of linguists, writers and journalists but of society as a whole. Particular emphasis was placed on making effective use of the Azerbaijani language, observing linguistic norms and fostering a respectful attitude towards the native language among younger generations.

The meeting concluded with a question-and-answer session, during which students raised questions and exchanged views on the topics discussed.
