A scholarly monograph titled Methodology for Calculating Biomass and Carbon Sequestration Potential in the Forests of Azerbaijan has been published. The work is co-authored by Yusif Abiyev, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Biology at Baku State University (BSU), and Juma Uykun, an expert from the Regional Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, specializing in Türkiye, Asia, and the Caucasus.

The publication was prepared by the Regional Development Public Association as part of the project Assessment of the Carbon Sequestration Potential of Tugai Forests and Restoration of the Forest Ecosystem, which was funded through the International Initiatives in Connection with COP29 grant competition by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and the Agency for State Support of Non-Governmental Organizations.

Members of the Student Scientific Society of BSU’s Biology Faculty—Nazira Abbasova, Fariz Hasanaliyev, and Aidan Veliyeva—actively contributed to the research and preparation of the book.

The project explored and documented the carbon absorption potential of tugai forests along the Kura River, particularly in the Garayazy State Nature Reserve. As part of the study, an assessment conducted in the Samur-Yalama National Park led to the development of an allometric equation for analyzing Azercosmos satellite images, aimed at evaluating the carbon absorption potential of lowland forests.
