BSU geologists discuss chemical and mineralogical composition of sedimentary rocks

13/02/2023

Faculty of Geology of Baku State University (BSU) hosted a scientific seminar on the topic «Dependence of the distribution of chemical elements in the deposits of the productive layer on the structural-lithological-mineralogical properties of rocks» on February 13, 2023.

Associate Professor Farrukh Hasanov made presentation on the chemical and mineralogical composition of sedimentary rocks. He provided information on the chemical and mineralogical composition of oil-bearing sedimentary rocks in the Bulla Sea and other fields.

It is noted that the chemical and mineralogical composition of rocks at great depths (from 6314 m to 6400 m) at the Bulla-Sea deposit changes dramatically. In this interval, the amount of quartz and feldspar sharply decreases, but the amount of calcite and barite minerals increases. The formation of carbonates in this section is associated with recrystallization, as one of the main processes leads to post-sedimentary changes and the formation of polymorphic calcite.
