BSU Holds Awareness Event on Breast Cancer
As part of the Pink October awareness campaign, Baku State University (BSU) hosted an event titled “Breast Cancer: From Science to Life.”
The event highlighted the importance of breast cancer prevention and early diagnosis. Vugar Yagublu, Director of BSU’s Centre for Biomedical Research and Technologies, and Gyumri Huseynova, Head of the Laboratory of Bioarchaeological Research, presented information on projects implemented under an agreement between BSU and the Main Military Medical Department of the State Security Service of Azerbaijan. They also noted that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women worldwide and in Azerbaijan.
The event continued with presentations by specialists from the Main Military Medical Department of the State Security Service: Samir Gurbanov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, oncologist, breast specialist, and oncoplastic and reconstructive surgeon; and Leyla Bayramova, a breast surgeon and oncologist.
Drawing on data from the World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer’s Global Cancer Observatory, the experts reported that approximately 2.3 million new cases of breast cancer are recorded worldwide each year. Women face an estimated 12–13% lifetime risk of developing the disease, equivalent to approximately one in eight women. However, when detected early and diagnosed promptly, breast cancer has a survival rate exceeding 90–95%.
The presentations also covered preventive screening methods aimed at reducing breast cancer risks and detecting the disease at an early stage.
At the end of the event, participants received informational brochures and had the opportunity to ask questions.
