A memorial event dedicated to the 34th anniversary of the Khojaly tragedy was held at Baku State University (BSU).

Addressing the event, Rector Elchin Babayev described the Khojaly tragedy as one of the gravest crimes against humanity committed at the end of the 20th century. He recalled that on the night of February 25–26, 1992, the civilian population of Khojaly was subjected to violent attack, resulting in the killing of 613 residents, including 106 women, 63 children, and 70 elderly people. According to the information presented, 1,000 civilians were wounded, eight families were completely annihilated, 25 children lost both parents, and 130 lost one parent. During the трагic events, 1,275 civilians were taken hostage, and the fate of 150 of them remains unknown.

The Rector noted that the first legal and political assessment of the tragedy was given by Heydar Aliyev. On February 24, 1994, the Milli Majlis adopted the resolution “On the Day of the Khojaly Genocide,” aimed at informing the international community about the events and calling for an appropriate response.

Speaking about international awareness efforts, Rector Babayev highlighted the activities of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, particularly the “Justice for Khojaly!” campaign initiated by the Foundation’s Vice President, Leyla Aliyeva.

He also emphasized that, as a result of the policies pursued by the President of Azerbaijan and Supreme Commander-in-Chief, Ilham Aliyev, the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty were restored. According to the Rector, the liberation of Khojaly has paved the way for the return of its residents and the comprehensive restoration of the city.

Members of the Milli Majlis Sevil Mikayilova and Tural Ganjaliyev underscored the importance of preserving historical memory and fostering a generation capable of safeguarding national values. They noted that the restoration of territorial integrity represents the continuation of the national development path.

Turgay Huseynov, Head of the UNESCO Department of Human Rights and Information Law, and Aysel Guliyeva, a history student originally from Khojaly, stated that the memory of the victims will be preserved and that the city is steadily rebuilding and developing.
