Baku State University (BSU) has launched a Republican scientific conference on "Modern Problems of Ecological Chemistry and Environmental Protection," marking the university's 105th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of its Department of Ecological Chemistry.

In his opening remarks, BSU Rector Elchin Babayev emphasized Azerbaijan's proactive stance on global energy security, combating climate change, and transitioning to a "green economy." He highlighted the country’s strategic focus on sustainability, as outlined in the "Azerbaijan 2030: National Priorities of Socioeconomic Development," where "Clean Environment and Country of Green Growth" is a key priority. The recent designation of 2024 as the "Year of Solidarity for a Green World" further accelerates these goals.

The Rector underscored BSU's contributions to environmental research and education, citing initiatives such as the Faculty of Ecology and Soil Science, the Environmental Chemistry Laboratory, and the ECOLEAD Clinic—established in collaboration with government agencies to address environmental violations. Additionally, BSU’s “ECO SPACE” program plays a vital role in teaching students to innovate in "green energy" and "green food" production, fostering a "green atmosphere."

The Department of Ecological Chemistry, established in 2004 under the leadership of Academician Rafiga Aliyeva and chaired since inception by Professor Sevinj Hajiyeva, was also celebrated. The department’s impactful research includes ecological and chemical studies of Karabakh, Eastern Zangezur, the Absheron Lakes, and the Kura River. It has also made significant advancements in wastewater treatment, synthesis of corrosion-resistant organic compounds, and the separation of heavy metal ions. Over two decades, the department has produced 26 PhD graduates, seven Doctors of Science, 23 patents, and seven grant-funded projects.

Dean of the Faculty of Ecology and Soil Science, Akif Agbabali, highlighted the department's history, recent developments, and its pivotal role in recruiting doctoral students. He noted that the conference received 206 scientific article submissions from over 30 organizations, with 178 abstracts accepted for publication.

Professor Sevinj Hajiyeva elaborated on the department’s achievements and its emphasis on advancing chemical ecology and environmental research. Current projects focus on ecological-chemical studies in Karabakh and East Zangezur.

The conference was attended by prominent figures, including Vice-President of ANAS, Academician Irada Huseynova; Director General of the Institute of Chemistry of Additives, Academician Vagif Farzaliyev; Director General of the Institute of Radiation Problems, Corresponding Member of ANAS Islam Mustafayev; and Director General of the Institute of Petrochemical Processes, Academician Vagif Abbasov.
