BSU hosts Council of Europe training
The Faculty of Law of Baku State University has hosted the event entitled “European Court of Human Rights – Precedent related to Domestic Violence and Violence against Women” in the framework of the project “Raising awareness of the Istanbul Convention and other gender equality standards in Azerbaijan”, supported by The EU's Eastern Partnership and CoE Partnership for Good Governance.
Ambassador Zoltan Hernyes, Head of Baku Office of the Council of Europe; Zaur Aliyev, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Baku State University; Sandra Veloy Mateu, Project Manager at the Gender Equality Division, Council of Europe and Latif Huseynov, Judge at the European Court of Human Rights in respect of Azerbaijan spoke at the event.
Ambassador Zoltan Hernyes made the opening speech. This project seeks to provide support to the Azerbaijani authorities in their path towards the signature and ratification of the Istanbul Convention and to bring national legislation and policies in line with the Council of Europe standards, Ambassador Zoltan Hernyes said when addressing the event.
Sandra Veloy Mateu, Project Manager at the Gender Equality Division, Council of Europe made presentation on “Raising awareness of the Istanbul Convention and other gender equality standards in Azerbaijan” project.
Zaur Aliyev, Dean of the Faculty of Law shared information about the curriculum at the Faculty of Law. He stressed that "Combating Domestic Violence" course is included in the undergraduate curriculum and “Precedent in the European Court of Justice” course is included in the graduate curriculum.
Latif Huseynov, Judge at the European Court of Human Rights in respect of Azerbaijan spoke about the European Court of Human Rights, the mechanism of its work, consideration of appeals.
The event was followed by a question-and-answer session with students.
