Baku State University (BSU) hosted an event titled “Toponymic Traces of Victory” as part of the “44 Pillars of Victory” project.

The event explored the rich toponymic heritage of Karabakh and East Zangezur, focusing on the origins of geographical names and their historical and etymological characteristics. It opened with a minute of silence in memory of the Azerbaijani martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country’s territorial integrity.

Maksud Hojamanov, Dean of BSU’s Faculty of Geography, emphasised the importance of studying the historical and geographical heritage of Karabakh and East Zangezur, particularly the region’s place names, in preserving historical memory and passing it on to future generations.

Elkhan Nuriyev, Associate Professor at the Department of Economic and Political Geography of Foreign Countries and Tourism, then delivered a detailed presentation. He discussed the history and etymological features of geographical names in the liberated territories, noting how these names reflect the ethnic identity and cultural heritage of the people. He also highlighted the importance of preserving the region’s toponymic heritage as a means of safeguarding historical truths and strengthening national identity.

The event aimed to foster young people’s interest in Azerbaijan’s historical and geographical heritage and promote awareness of the realities of Karabakh through academic research. It concluded with an interactive discussion and a question-and-answer session.
