BSU Hosts Event: 'The Long History of One March – Mehmet Akif Ersoy and the Independence March'
Baku State University (BSU) hosted an event titled “The Long History of One March – Mehmet Akif Ersoy and the Independence March”, jointly organized by the Faculty of Oriental Studies and the Baku Yunus Emre Institute.
The event was dedicated to the anniversary of the adoption of Turkey’s national anthem, the Independence March, and the commemoration of its author, Mehmet Akif Ersoy.
Speaking at the event, BSU Vice-Rector Farda Imanov highlighted the deep-rooted Azerbaijani-Turkish relations, emphasizing their foundation in brotherhood and friendship. He noted the strong historical, cultural, and scientific ties between the two nations, stating: “Turkey was the first country to recognize Azerbaijan’s independence. In 2020, we felt the full support of our brotherly nation during the Patriotic War. The Shusha Declaration further solidified our relations. BSU collaborates with over 100 universities worldwide, with a significant number of them being Turkish institutions.”
Dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, Aydan Handan, acknowledged the Baku Yunus Emre Institute’s decade-long presence in Azerbaijan and its contributions to cultural events in collaboration with the faculty. She emphasized the literary significance of Mehmet Akif Ersoy’s legacy: “He is always remembered when the Independence March is played, as its words resonate with the Azerbaijani anthem. This reflects the shared emotions and unity of our peoples. Azerbaijan and Turkey are bound by inseparable ties, with a common language and culture.”
Head of the Baku Yunus Emre Institute, Güven Çolak, also underlined the strong connection between the two nations: “Borders do not hinder the friendship of hearts. This is why the people of both countries refer to each other as ‘brothers.’”
The event featured speeches from Turkish writer Bashir Ayvazoglu, Turkologist Elman Guliyev, and historian Telman Nusretoglu, who all shared insights on the historical and cultural significance of Mehmet Akif Ersoy’s work.
The event concluded with students reciting poems by Mehmet Akif Ersoy, paying tribute to his literary and national contributions.
