BSU Hosts Presentation on Environmental Impact of Armenia’s Mining Industry
Baku State University (BSU) held a presentation of an interactive map highlighting the environmental damage caused by mining enterprises operating in Armenia. The map was developed by the Environmental Protection First coalition.
Amin Mammadov, co-founder of the coalition and Chairman of the Public Council under the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, along with coalition member Mugabil Bayramov, briefed attendees on the coalition’s activities. Mammadov emphasized that the purpose of the event was to raise awareness about the environmental consequences of Armenia’s mining operations in the South Caucasus and to foster cooperation in assessing the ecological damage.
The speakers noted that the map and accompanying report were developed using satellite imagery, documenting industrial enterprises engaged in the extraction of ferrous and non-ferrous metals in over 20 locations across Armenia, particularly near areas adjacent to Azerbaijan. The compilation of the interactive map involved analysis of historical maps, archival data, and official reports.
The presentation also featured a demonstration of the website hosting the interactive map, with an overview of its tools and functions.
The event concluded with a lively Q&A session and discussions among participants.
