A presentation titled “Combating AIDS and the Family” was delivered by master’s students specialising in Clinical Social Work as part of the course “Clinical Social Work with Families” at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Psychology of Baku State University (BSU).

The presentation was prepared under the academic supervision of Associate Professor Rena Mammadova of the Department of Social Work. The participating master’s students were Gunel Umudova, Fateh Mustafazade, Sayjan Adigozalli, Aytaj Gasimova, Nargiz Mammadova, Sevil Khalilova, Akif Alizade, Milana Shirelizade, Nezrin Hasan-zade and Fatima Manafova.

Structured into eight sections, the presentation examined the impact of an HIV/AIDS diagnosis on family relationships through clinical case studies. One case study, titled “My Mother No Longer Touches Me,” explored the psychological challenges faced by an 18-year-old young man within his family and the changes in family dynamics following his diagnosis.

Another case study analysed, from the perspective of clinical social work, the reasons why a 29-year-old woman concealed her diagnosis from her family.

The presentation attracted considerable interest and highlighted the vital role of clinical social work in providing psychosocial support to people living with HIV and their families, connecting them with appropriate services and supporting them throughout the care process.
