BSU Hosts Renowned Turkologist Professor Nimet Yıldırım
Baku State University (BSU) hosted a meeting with Professor Nimet Yıldırım of Atatürk University, Türkiye.
The event began with an overview of Professor Yıldırım’s academic career and scholarly contributions. Dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, Aydan Handan, emphasized the importance of scientific collaboration with Türkiye and highlighted BSU’s active role in the development of Turkology. She noted that Professor Yıldırım has made significant contributions to Nizami studies and to introducing the great poet’s legacy to the Turkic world.
Güven Çolak, Coordinator of the Yunus Emre Institute in Baku, praised the ongoing cooperation with BSU and noted that such academic exchanges greatly benefit Turkic studies.
In his remarks, Professor Nimet Yıldırım pointed out that few of Nizami Ganjavi’s works have been translated into Turkish, underlining the urgent need for broader promotion of the poet in Türkiye. He described the translation of Nizami’s works as an immensely challenging yet honorable task. Professor Yıldırım discussed his translations of “The Treasury of Secrets” and “Iskendername”, analyzing their language and stylistic features. He also shared insights on Nizami’s national identity, the central themes of his poetry, comparisons of scientific and critical editions, and his efforts in compiling a dictionary of Nizami’s language.
The meeting concluded with a Q&A session, during which the scholar addressed questions from participants.
