BSU hosts scientific seminar on 'Prospects of Sodium-ion Batteries'

09/02/2024

Almara Ragimli, a research fellow in the Nano-research laboratory, discussed sodium-ion batteries, highlighting their advantages over lithium-ion batteries, their parameters, similarities, differences, and the latest developments in this field. The speaker emphasized that the cost of production for sodium-ion batteries is lower due to the unlimited reserve of sodium. They can also be manufactured in sizes similar to lithium-ion batteries, unlike sodium-sulfur batteries.

Materials used as anodes in sodium-ion batteries, when interacting with sodium, swell to 400-500 percent of their original size, causing mechanical damage and loss of electrical contact. Recently, research has been conducted on the use of new types of graphite layers for the negative electrode of sodium-ion batteries, raising hopes that these battery types will replace lithium-ion batteries.
