BSU Hosts Seminar on Bioarchaeology
The first seminar in a new scientific series was held at the Archaeological Education and Research Center of Baku State University (BSU). Vusal Hasanov, Head of the Physical Anthropology Laboratory at the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS, delivered a report titled “Bioarchaeology: Reconstructing the Past Based on Human Remains.”
He described bioarchaeology as an interdisciplinary field combining anthropology, archaeology, and biology to study human remains and reveal insights into the lifestyle, health, and demographics of ancient societies. Hasanov highlighted the role of skeletal and dental analysis, as well as modern methods such as DNA and isotope research, in understanding migration, diet, and disease.
The presentation also covered the evolution of burial practices in Azerbaijan from prehistoric to early historical periods. The seminar concluded with a Q&A session.
