BSU Hosts Seminar on Sturgeon Aquaculture Development
A scientific seminar entitled “Potential for Sturgeon Aquaculture in Azerbaijan” was held at the Faculty of Biology of Baku State University (BSU) as part of the events dedicated to March 27 – Science Day.
The seminar featured a presentation by Zaur Salmanli, a lecturer at the Department of Zoology and Physiology. In his remarks, he noted that sturgeon farming in Azerbaijan is rooted in long-standing historical traditions and today represents an important strategic direction for economic development. He emphasized that sturgeons, widely distributed in the Caspian Sea basin, play a key role in caviar production and offer considerable export potential through aquaculture development.
The presentation examined opportunities for sturgeon cultivation in cages, tanks, and ponds, taking into account their biological characteristics, including longevity, late sexual maturity, high fecundity, and specific environmental requirements.
Given the country’s limited freshwater resources, particular attention was paid to the application of modern water-saving technologies, such as recirculating aquaculture systems. It was noted that the development of sturgeon aquaculture could significantly contribute to the diversification of the agricultural sector, increased regional employment, the protection of natural populations, and the strengthening of the food industry’s raw material base.
The seminar concluded with an exchange of views among participants, who discussed the prospects for establishing a sustainable and export-oriented aquaculture sector in Azerbaijan.
