BSU Hosts Seminar on the Role of Mathematical Methods in Historical Science
The Faculty of History at Baku State University (BSU) held a scientific seminar on the topic "Scientific Features and Importance of Using Mathematical Methods in Historical Science" in honor of March 27 – Science Day.
Associate Professor Aydin Mammadov, from the Department of Source Studies, Historiography, and Methodology, delivered a report emphasizing the necessity of applying exact science methodologies to historical research. He highlighted that mathematics, often referred to as the "queen of sciences," plays a crucial role in enhancing the study of various academic disciplines, including history.
In historical science, mathematical methods serve as essential tools for addressing complex research problems. These methods are widely applied across various areas of historical studies, aiding in the analysis of historical events and objects. The ability to integrate mathematical techniques into both history education and research in the social and humanitarian sciences reflects the evolving demands of modern scholarship.
Professor Mammadov underscored that in the humanities, numerical data serve as valuable carriers of information, with traditional quantitative methods playing a key role in historical analysis. The process of mathematizing historical data should be viewed as a comprehensive approach that examines how quantitative indicators influence social processes and societal developments.
The seminar provided valuable insights into the interdisciplinary application of mathematical methods in historical studies, reinforcing the importance of quantitative analysis in understanding historical phenomena.
