The Baku State University (BSU) Archaeology Research and Education Center has joined an international archaeological research project at Azykh Cave, one of Azerbaijan’s and the South Caucasus’s most significant Paleolithic sites.

International research at the cave has been conducted since 2024 with the participation of the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan and the Leibniz Center for Archaeology (LEIZA). Since 2026, BSU’s Archaeology Research and Education Center has also been involved. Researchers from universities in Portugal, Denmark, Poland, and Norway are contributing to the project, which applies multidisciplinary approaches to the study of the cave.

Aslan Gasimov, Director of the BSU Archaeology Research and Education Center, has participated in the archaeological expedition and led excavations at Azykh Cave since 2024. Recent excavations have uncovered ceramic fragments, stone tools, and bone remains. The recovered materials will be restored, preserved, and analyzed using the facilities of BSU’s Archaeology Research and Education Center and the Research Center for Advanced Materials Science and Development.

BSU’s involvement strengthens the university’s role in archaeological research and promotes the use of modern archaeological analysis and digitalization methods. The collaboration also creates opportunities for young researchers and students to gain experience through participation in international scientific projects.
