As part of the “Year of Constitution and Sovereignty,” a national academic conference titled “The Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan as the Historical, Legal, and Political-Economic Foundation of Our Statehood” has opened at Baku State University. Prior to the event, participants honored the memory of national leader Heydar Aliyev by laying flowers at his grave in the Alley of Honor.

At the opening ceremony, BSU Rector Elchin Babayev noted that the Constitution adopted in 1995 laid a solid foundation for Azerbaijan’s independent statehood and now also encompasses the country’s economic, technological, and informational sovereignty. He emphasized that the restoration of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity has marked an important stage in further strengthening its sovereignty.

Speakers at the event included Deputy Chairman of the Milli Majlis Ziyafet Asgarov, Deputy Minister of Justice Abiddin Huseynov, members of parliament, representatives of judicial and legal institutions, and the leadership of BSU. Their remarks focused on Azerbaijan’s constitutional development, the protection of human rights and freedoms, and ongoing legal reforms.

Also addressing the conference were Anar Iskandarov, Chairman of the Milli Majlis Committee on Science and Education and Head of Department at BSU; Hijran Huseynova, Chairperson of the Milli Majlis Committee on Family, Women, and Children’s Issues and Head of Department at BSU; Ibrahim Zeynalov, Dean of the Faculty of History; Zaur Aliyev, Dean of the Faculty of Law; Kerem Mansurov, Chief of Staff of the Judicial-Legal Council; Fazil Hasanaliyev, Head of the Scientific and Educational Center of the Prosecutor General’s Office; Shahmar Mammadov, Deputy Chairman of the Bar Association; Mobil Shefiev, Deputy Prosecutor of Baku; and Abbas Rzayev, Chairman of the Khazar District Court.

The conference continues its work through breakout sessions.
