BSU Marks International Day for Monuments and Sites
The History Department of Baku State University (BSU) held a scientific seminar in honor of April 18 – the International Day for Monuments and Sites.
The event was moderated by Gunel Orujaliyeva, Director of the BSU History Museum, who highlighted that this important day was established by UNESCO in 1983, following a proposal by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS). Its purpose is to raise awareness about the protection and preservation of cultural heritage sites around the world.
Associate Professor Kamala Najafova, Deputy Dean of the Faculty, delivered remarks on the various restoration and preservation projects undertaken in Azerbaijan. She emphasized the importance of safeguarding historical monuments and passing them on to future generations.
The seminar continued with a presentation by master’s student Aynur Agayeva, titled “Reflection of the Everyday Life of Our Ancient Cities in Archaeological Monuments.”
Dr. Tarikh Dostiyev, Head of the Department of Archaeology and Ethnography and Doctor of Historical Sciences, underscored the significance of archaeological discoveries in Azerbaijan. He noted that the ancient human jawbone found in the Azykh Cave is evidence that Azerbaijan is among the earliest human settlements. Additionally, findings from the Gobustan region further confirm that this territory has been inhabited since prehistoric times.
