BSU rector delivered a speech to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space
Rector of Baku State University (BSU) Elchin Babayev attended 57th session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). He made a presentation on “Baku State University: achievements and prospects of cooperation in the field of science, education and innovation”. Elchin Babayev informed about the scientific researches in the field of space weather in Azerbaijan, solar physics and solar terrestrial relations, current international integration and its prospects.
Elchin Babayev held talks with Natchimuthuk Gopalswamy, a staff scientist at the Heliophysics Division of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center; Patricia Doherty, Senior Research Scientist at the Institute for Scientific Research at Boston College; Sharafat Gadimova, Project Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) to discuss the possibilities of cooperation with BSU.
At the 57th session, agreement was reached on joining of BSU to e-CALLISTO Network System, as well as the SOFIE system (Germany).
The Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space was set up by the General Assembly in 1959 (resolution 1472 (XIV)) to review the scope of international cooperation in peaceful uses of outer space, to devise programmes in this field to be undertaken under United Nations auspices, to encourage continued research and the dissemination of information on outer space matters, and to study legal problems arising from the exploration of outer space.
