BSU Rector Speaks at International Space Weather Initiative Program Meeting
The regular meeting of the International Space Weather Initiative (ISWI) Steering Committee was held in Vienna, Austria, under the coordination of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS).
At the invitation of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), Elchin Babayev, Rector of Baku State University (BSU) and ISWI National Coordinator for Azerbaijan, delivered a report on the country’s space weather research and organizational activities over the past five years.
His presentation focused on Azerbaijan’s research activities in space weather, international cooperation mechanisms, and the results obtained from instrument data analysis. The report highlighted the organization of national observation systems, participation in international networks, integration into data analysis and modeling processes, and the development of scientific potential in this field. Information was also provided on relevant institutions, ongoing research projects, and collaborative initiatives.
Special attention was given to the integration of space weather studies into higher education, personnel training, the involvement of young researchers and students, public awareness activities, and the strengthening of public outreach. It was emphasized that space weather research is important not only from a fundamental scientific perspective, but also for understanding the impact of solar activity on the Earth’s atmosphere, ionosphere, magnetic field, biological systems, climate, and modern technological infrastructure, including communication, navigation, and energy systems.
The report concluded by noting that Azerbaijan is ready to host future international scientific events in this field.
