A scientific seminar titled “Prospects for the Use of Geothermal Energy on the Absheron Peninsula” was held at Baku State University (BSU).

Dean of the Faculty of Geology, Mamoy Mansurov, emphasized that the expansion of alternative and renewable energy sources remains a key priority of energy policy. He noted that the development of geothermal energy is strategically important for energy security, environmental sustainability, and economic efficiency.

The speaker, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Seismology and Physics of the Earth’s Interior Aygun Mammadova, highlighted that the geothermal potential of the Absheron Peninsula has not yet been fully utilized. She pointed to the presence of high-temperature waters in deep geological layers, thermal anomalies linked to oil and gas fields, and mud volcanism as indicators of the region’s strong potential for geothermal energy development.

The presentation also covered key applications of geothermal energy, including electricity generation, heating of residential and industrial facilities, and use in agriculture. It was noted that innovative technologies and modern scientific approaches could significantly enhance the efficiency of resource utilization.

Participants discussed the environmental benefits of geothermal energy, particularly its role in reducing carbon emissions and advancing green energy policies. The importance of assessing geological risks, studying links with seismic activity, and minimizing environmental impact in geothermal projects was also underscored.

The seminar concluded with interactive discussions on the prospects for geothermal energy in the country, its economic viability, and future research directions.
