A hands-on training session titled "Using GPS in Geological Exploration" was held at Baku State University (BSU), offering geology students valuable practical experience.

The session was conducted by Elfag Mammadov, a specialist at AzerGold CJSC and lecturer at the Department of Seismology and Subsoil Physics, Faculty of Geology. The main objective was to acquaint students with modern geological research methods, specifically the use of GPS technologies in field exploration, and to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

At the beginning of the session, participants were introduced to the functions and capabilities of the Garmin GPSMAP device used during the training. It was highlighted that these devices support two-way text messaging, enabled by the global Iridium satellite network, allowing users to communicate via SMS and email from virtually anywhere. The device also includes an emergency SOS feature that connects directly with the GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Center—an essential safety feature during fieldwork.

Additionally, the GPS tracking function enables real-time coordinate monitoring and route recording on digital maps. The device can also be synced with smartphones via Bluetooth using the Garmin Earthmate or Explore apps, streamlining map usage and message writing.

During the practical segment of the session, students engaged in determining geographic coordinates, collecting field data, and transferring this information onto maps—gaining firsthand experience in GPS-based geological mapping.
