BSU Students Participate in Round Table on World Wildlife Day
Faculty and students from the Faculties of Ecology, Soil Science, and Biology at Baku State University (BSU) took part in a round table discussion organized by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources (MENR) in honor of World Wildlife Day.
Speaking at the event, Seiyara Mammadova, Head of MENR’s Environmental Education and Communication Department, highlighted the significance of March 3 as World Wildlife Day, a global initiative established in 2013 to raise awareness about wildlife conservation and the protection of rare plant and animal species. She noted that the theme for World Wildlife Day 2025 is “Financing Wildlife Conservation: Investing in People and Planet”, emphasizing the urgent need for sustainable funding to protect biodiversity. She also stressed that over 1 million species are currently at risk of extinction, underscoring the severity of the ongoing environmental crisis.
The event featured speeches from:
• Arzu Babayeva, Deputy Head of the MENR Biodiversity Protection Service
• Elshad Askerov, Director of the Azerbaijan Representative Office of the World Wildlife Fund
• Elchin Sultanov, Director of the Azerbaijan Ornithological Society
As part of the event, Seiyara Mammadova presented a copy of the book "Nature of Azerbaijan" to BSU’s Faculty of Ecology and Soil Science, recognizing the university’s commitment to environmental education and research.
The round table concluded with a Q&A session, where participants had the opportunity to engage in discussions on wildlife conservation and environmental sustainability.
