BSU Studies the Impact of Salt Stress on Plants

06/04/2026

Research on the effects of salt stress on plants is underway at the Faculty of Biology of Baku State University (BSU).

At a faculty seminar, Boyukhanim Jafarzade, a doctoral student in the Department of Botany and Plant Physiology and a researcher at the Bioengineering Research Laboratory, presented a report titled “Study of the Antioxidant Defense System in Plants with Varying Degrees of Salt Tolerance.”

The presentation examined key physiological and biochemical indicators, including water balance, relative water content, photosynthetic pigments, antioxidant enzyme activity, and changes in non-enzymatic components. It was noted that increased salinity disrupts osmotic balance, intensifies ionic toxicity and oxidative stress, and ultimately impairs plant growth, development, and productivity.

The report also highlighted the practical significance of the findings, emphasizing their role in the selection of crops suitable for saline soils, identification of stress-resistant varieties, and maintenance of agricultural productivity. The research contributes to the efficient use of land resources, strengthening food security, and the development of sustainable agricultural practices.

The seminar concluded with a discussion session, during which participants exchanged views and addressed questions.
