BSU to Conduct Genetic DNA Analysis
BSU Rector Elchin Babayev, recently met with the Director General of the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS, Farhad Guliyev; Professor Hirofumi Matsumura from Sapporo Medical University (Japan); and the Head of the Department of Anthropology at Hacettepe University (Türkiye), Yilmaz Selim Erdal.
During the meeting, they discussed establishing a joint laboratory and a dedicated department at BSU, equipping these facilities with advanced archaeological tools and equipment, expanding student field expeditions, and collaborating on archaeological research in Karabakh. A key focus was BSU's plan to conduct genetic DNA analysis on bone samples obtained during archaeological excavations.
This initiative aims to study the genetic heritage, migrations, and lifestyle of ancient peoples while contributing to a deeper understanding of Azerbaijan's historical and cultural heritage. The newly established laboratory at BSU, supported by its existing scientific expertise, will enable research aligned with international standards.
The laboratory will specialize in DNA extraction from bone and tooth samples, mitochondrial DNA analysis, and full genomic studies. These efforts will shed light on ancient migrations, genetic diseases, and cultural connections. BSU also aims to strengthen international cooperation in this field and share its research findings globally.
