16/07/2025

Baku State University (BSU) continues to attract international students and researchers from around the world. Indonesian citizens Abdul Waris and Reza Aprianti are currently pursuing doctoral studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Psychology under the Heydar Aliyev International Educational Grant. The couple, who came to Azerbaijan with their children, shared their impressions of daily life, the educational environment at BSU, and their future plans:

— How did you decide to study at BSU?

Abdul Waris:
The main reason for choosing BSU was its international scientific reputation. Its ranking of 688th in the QS World University Rankings, rich library collections and scientific resources, and the volume of research published in Scopus-indexed journals were important indicators for us. BSU’s academic environment, modern research facilities, and professional teaching staff create excellent conditions for our scientific development.

Reza Aprianti:
I am pursuing a doctorate in Social Communication. My research interests include mass communication, disaster communication, and semiotics. Previously, I worked as a teacher, laboratory manager, program coordinator, and editor of scientific journals in Indonesia. I have presented at international conferences and published in prestigious journals. BSU’s scientific potential, its opportunities for international collaboration, and the cultural closeness between Azerbaijan and Indonesia all played an important role in our decision.

— How do you feel in Azerbaijan?

Reza Aprianti:
When we first arrived, we were amazed by the sincerity and kindness of the people. Baku is a very safe and comfortable city to live in. Everyone welcomed us warmly, and we did not face any difficulties.

Abdul Waris:
Coming from a tropical country, it was initially a bit challenging to adapt to Azerbaijan’s winters, but over time we got used to it. We were amazed by Azerbaijan’s rich natural beauty. We saw snow for the first time here and had a lot of fun, even making a snowman with our children.

— Our cuisines are very different. How did you adapt?

Abdul Waris:
In Indonesia, we eat rice almost every day, whereas in Azerbaijan, bread is the staple. It was a new and interesting experience for us.

Reza Aprianti:
Azerbaijani cuisine is very rich. Our favorite dish is dolma – it combines both unusual and familiar flavours. We are also impressed by the local feast culture. Spicy food is popular in our country, so I dry vegetables myself to prepare for winter.

— How do you organise your children's education?

Abdul Waris:
We have three children, and two of them continue their education online through their schools in Indonesia. Although it was difficult at first, we have now adapted to this system. Azerbaijan offers a safe and stable environment for family life.

Reza Aprianti:
Azerbaijan is very suitable for families. People are understanding and kind, and our children quickly adapted to local life and feel comfortable here.

— Are you satisfied with the opportunities for scientific activity at BSU?

Reza Aprianti:
We are completely satisfied with the quality of education at BSU. The teaching staff approaches each student individually, and classes are interactive and informative. The library and scientific resources meet modern standards.

Abdul Waris:
BSU provides us not only with theoretical knowledge but also with ample opportunities for scientific research. The university has created ideal conditions for us both academically and socially.

— Do you plan to continue your scientific activity in Azerbaijan?

Abdul Waris:
After completing my studies, I would like to stay in Azerbaijan and continue my scientific work here. Although we have not made a final decision, Azerbaijan has already become our second home.

Reza Aprianti:
Our future plans include continuing our academic careers in Azerbaijan or Indonesia. We want to strengthen scientific ties with both countries.

— What advice would you give to international students who want to study at BSU?

Reza Aprianti:
Azerbaijan is a very hospitable country, and BSU is a prestigious, world-renowned university that offers quality education. International students can apply without hesitation.

Abdul Waris:
If your goal is scientific development and gaining international experience, Baku State University is the right choice. Here, you will gain valuable academic knowledge as well as important life experience.
