Impact of Climate Change on Rivers Discussed at BSU
A presentation titled "Impact of Regional Climate Change on Water Resources of Rivers in Azerbaijan" was held at the Faculty of Geography of Baku State University (BSU) in honor of March 27 – Science Day. The presentation was delivered by Professor Rza Mahmudov, Head of the Department at the Institute of Geography named after Academician Hasan Aliyev.
Professor Magsud Gojamanov, Dean of the Faculty, emphasized that addressing the consequences of climate change remains a key priority of Azerbaijan’s state policy. He highlighted that Azerbaijan’s hosting of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) reaffirms the country’s global commitment to environmental issues.
In his speech, Professor Rza Mahmudov elaborated on the profound effects of climate change, including fluctuations in sea and ocean levels, desertification, deforestation, and its broader impact on human life. He reported that globally, the air temperature has risen by 1.10°C since 1970, whereas in Azerbaijan, this increase has been 1.30°C. The warmest period was recorded between 2016 and 2024.
Analyzing regional temperature changes in Azerbaijan, Professor Mahmudov pointed out that the most significant temperature increases were observed in the Gobustan-Absheron zone. Concurrently, a decrease in precipitation has been recorded across the country, exacerbating the challenges posed by climate change.
Following the presentation, faculty members and students engaged in a discussion, posing questions and exchanging insights on the subject.
