The ceremony started with a minute of silence for victims of the January tragedy.

Rector of BSU, academician Abel Maharramov informed about the historical roots of this bloody tragedy. He said the 20 January 1990 is a day, which went down in the history as the struggle for the freedom and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, and as a heroism page. He mentioned that first political and legal assessment of this event was given at the initiative of  Azerbaijani people’s national leader Heydar Aliyev.

Then the dean of the Faculty of Theology, academician Vasim Mammadaliyev, the shahid’s father, the head of the sociology department, professor Izzet Rustamov, the student of the biological faculty Vafa Mursalzade made speeches.
