Problems of Economic Physics Discussed at BSU

13/03/2025

A scientific seminar on the problems of economic physics, dedicated to Science Day on March 27, was held at Baku State University (BSU).

The seminar was jointly organized by the Department of Physics and the Faculty of International Relations and Economics.

Opening the event, the deans of the respective faculties, Bakhtiyar Pashayev and Lachin Abishly, emphasized the relevance of the topic and the significance of interdisciplinary collaboration between faculties.

Professor Maarif Jafarov, Head of the Department of Chemical Physics of Nanomaterials, delivered a keynote report titled “The Present and Future of Economic Physics.” He highlighted the crucial role of interdisciplinary integration, explaining how the application of physics principles to other scientific fields has given rise to new areas of study. One such field is economic physics, or econophysics.

Jafarov noted that the term econophysics was first introduced in 1997 in research applying statistical physics methods to financial data analysis. Since 1998, conferences on econophysics have been held in Europe and North America, showcasing studies on the application of physical laws to economic processes. He further explained that leading universities worldwide now offer specialized programs in econophysics, recognizing it as a field with significant future potential.

The professor outlined the key topics covered in econophysics education, illustrating how thermodynamics, statistical physics, and quantum physics principles are applied to economic studies. He also discussed the steps necessary for establishing econophysics training programs at BSU.

The seminar concluded with a Q&A session, where the speaker addressed participants’ questions and engaged in further discussion on the topic.
