Professor Chagry Karakurt from Boğaziçi University delivered a lecture at Baku State University (BSU) on the issues of modern topology.
The speaker reported that a series of results obtained in the 1960s led to a focus on low-dimensional topologies. Although Stephen Smale solved the Poincaré problem in multidimensional spaces in 1961, the problem remained unresolved for three- and four-dimensional cases. This necessitated the application of new methods. In 1982, Michael Freedman solved this problem in the four-dimensional case, and in 2002, Grigori Perelman solved it in the three-dimensional case.
