Professor from Hacettepe University Delivers Scientific Seminar at BSU
As part of events dedicated to March 27 – Science Day in the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Student Scientific Society (TEC) of the Faculty of Biology at Baku State University (BSU) organized an online scientific seminar titled “Global Warming.” The seminar was delivered by Professor Ali Demirsoy, a zoologist and entomologist from Hacettepe University (Türkiye).
In his presentation, Professor Demirsoy analyzed the impact of global warming on ecosystems using scientific and statistical data. He noted that the growing concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere disrupts the balance of the biosphere and leads to significant ecological changes. Rising temperatures are altering natural habitats, narrowing the distribution ranges of some species and forcing others to migrate. According to the speaker, these changes particularly affect insect fauna and may increase the number of agricultural pest species.
Professor Demirsoy also highlighted the potential risks of climate change for Azerbaijan, including declining water resources, the lowering level of the Caspian Sea, and increasing drought in agriculture. He emphasized the importance of accelerating the transition to green energy and applying modern technologies in water management to mitigate environmental challenges.
The seminar also addressed Türkiye’s experience in combating climate change, including scientific projects on climate modeling, biodiversity monitoring, and sustainable water management. The use of water recycling, drip irrigation technologies, and alternative energy sources was highlighted as key priorities, particularly in drought-prone regions.
In conclusion, Rasim Abbaszadeh, Chairman of the Faculty of Biology’s TEC, noted that such seminars play an important role in introducing students to modern scientific approaches and raising awareness of global environmental issues.
