Professor from Tel Aviv University Delivers Lecture at BSU
A scientific lecture addressing the geological and geophysical characteristics of the Eastern Mediterranean was held at Baku State University (BSU). The lecture was delivered by Professor Lev Eppelbaum of Tel Aviv University.
BSU Rector Elchin Babayev noted that Lev Eppelbaum, who was born in Azerbaijan, is a world-renowned scholar in the fields of geology and geophysics. He emphasized that lectures delivered by distinguished scientists are highly valuable in helping BSU students develop their professional expertise. The rector also noted that, alongside conducting significant research in geology, Professor Eppelbaum studies its practical applications, and expressed his appreciation for the distinguished scholar’s collaboration with BSU.
Professor Fakhraddin Gadirov of the Department of Seismology and Earth Interior Physics at the Faculty of Geology of BSU noted that research related to Azerbaijan also holds an important place in Lev Eppelbaum’s scientific work. For his internationally recognized contributions to geophysics, Professor Eppelbaum was awarded the Christian Huygens Medal by the European Geosciences Union. He is also an Honorary Professor of Azerbaijan State University of Oil and Industry.
Lev Eppelbaum delivered a lecture titled “A Giant Counterclockwise-Rotating Quasi-Ring Mantle Structure Beneath the Eastern Mediterranean and Its Manifestation in Geophysical Fields and Geological Features.” In his presentation, he provided an overview of the characteristics of the giant quasi-ring mantle structure located deep beneath the Eastern Mediterranean, its geodynamics, and its relationship to the geological structure of the region.
The lecture also featured scientific information on magnetic and gravitational fields, tectonic structures, geological boundaries, and major tectonic fault zones. Maps prepared using various geophysical datasets were presented, and the geodynamic characteristics of the region were explained.
The lecture concluded with a discussion of the topic, followed by a question-and-answer session with the participants.
