Rector of Üsküdar University Visits BSU’s Faculty of Journalism
Professor Nazife Güngör, Rector of Üsküdar University (Türkiye), met with students from the Faculty of Journalism at Baku State University (BSU).
In his welcoming speech, Associate Professor Vugar Aliyev, Dean of the Faculty of Journalism, highlighted the growing collaboration between BSU and Üsküdar University. He noted that the partnership spans educational initiatives, joint scientific research, and the organization of academic seminars and conferences. He also announced an upcoming international conference titled “Media and Communication Activities in the Digital Age,” which will be co-hosted by both universities in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Azerbaijani press.
In her address to the students, Professor Nazife Güngör spoke about the challenges journalists face in today’s information-saturated society. She emphasized that while modern media offers a wide array of tools, these also come with risks. “The true mark of journalistic professionalism lies in the ability to distinguish fact from falsehood,” she said. “Only by upholding this principle can journalists serve the needs of the information society.”
Professor Güngör warned that the rapid dissemination of unchecked information contributes to what she called "news pollution." She urged young journalists to ensure the factual accuracy of the information they publish, stressing that credibility is essential in the fast-paced digital era. “Social media, where information is shared and consumed at unprecedented speeds, is nearly impossible to regulate. Neither state nor private oversight mechanisms can keep up,” she added.
