Scientific Session on International Mother Language Day Held at BSU
A scientific session titled “Protecting the Purity of the Native Language: National Identity and Language in the Age of Globalization” was held at Baku State University to mark International Mother Language Day. The event was jointly organized by the Faculty of Philology and the Institute of Folklore of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.
Dean of the Faculty of Philology Elchin Mammadov spoke about the challenges languages face in the age of globalization, noting that increased interaction among nations inevitably influences languages. Referring to the experience of countries such as Germany and France, he highlighted the implementation of targeted programs aimed at protecting and promoting national languages. He also emphasized the importance of initiatives and statements by Ilham Aliyev regarding the preservation and proper use of the Azerbaijani language.
Director of the Institute of Folklore Hikmet Guliyev discussed the growing threats to languages in the era of globalization and the open information environment. He noted that although language, as a living system, can resist external influences, it still requires consistent protection and state support. According to him, preserving linguistic purity should involve not only schools and the media but also families and everyday communication, particularly in an era of rapidly developing artificial intelligence.
The session continued with presentations by prominent scholars, including Tofig Hajiyev, Khalil Agaverdi, Fikret Shiriyev, Eposh Veliyev, and researcher Zafar Farhadov, who addressed various aspects of protecting and developing the Azerbaijani language.
