Seminar on Climate-Resilient Urban Development Held at BSU
As part of “Urban Planning and Architecture Week,” organized by the BSU Volunteers, a seminar titled “Sustainable Urban Development: Infrastructure Solutions Resilient to Climate Change” was held at Baku State University (BSU).
The seminar was led by Gulnara Abbasova, Deputy Head of the National Hydrometeorological Service of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.
In her presentation, Ms. Abbasova highlighted that sustainable urban development and climate change are pressing issues not only globally but also for Azerbaijan. She pointed out that challenges such as rising temperatures, increased frequency of extreme weather events, and water resource management require innovative approaches to urban infrastructure planning.
Against the backdrop of rapid urbanization in Baku and other major cities, she emphasized the importance of maintaining ecological balance, expanding green spaces, improving drainage systems, and implementing energy-efficient construction technologies. She also noted that Azerbaijan is actively using climate observations and hydrometeorological data in urban planning to develop climate-resilient infrastructure, a key component of the country’s sustainable development strategy.
The seminar concluded with a discussion on the role of the Sustainable Development Goals in urban planning, international best practices, and modern approaches to climate-resilient urban development.
