05/06/2026

A scientific seminar titled “Forensic Genetics and STR Analysis” was held at Baku State University (BSU) with the support of the Student Scientific Society (SSS) of the Faculty of Biology.

During the event, Faculty of Biology student Ofeliya Abdullayeva delivered a presentation on forensic genetics, the biological significance of STR analysis, its areas of application, and the stages of its development. The presentation also examined the Colin Pitchfork case, which occupies a significant place in the history of forensic genetics, and explained how errors in DNA analysis can affect individuals’ lives and influence judicial decisions.

The seminar featured discussions on methods of collecting biological samples, different sample types, and the proper use of laboratory equipment, including autoclaves. Participants emphasized the importance of correctly operating laboratory equipment to prevent cross-contamination during DNA examinations, particularly the need for strict adherence to sterilization procedures when using autoclaves.

The seminar concluded with interactive discussions and a question-and-answer session with participants.
